The Orange Peel Presents Kruger Brothers plus Ethan Crump at The Sanctuary at CUMC

The Orange Peel presents Kruger Brothers plus Ethan Crump at The Sanctuary at CUMC – 27 Church Street
Show: 8pm
Doors: 7pm

Tickets & Info: www.theorangepeel.net/events/kruger-brothers/

*We are throwing a fun Asheville-style gathering outside on historic, shady, tree-lined Church Street from 5pm until the show begins at 8pm. Make a night of it and come downtown early to hang in the great urban outdoors for a few pre-show local beers and grub from some fave food trucks, followed by absolutely impeccable acoustics in the Sanctuary venue for this wonderful night of bluegrass. Sounds like a pretty perfect summer date or family night out to us!

Born and raised in Europe, brothers Jens and Uwe Kruger started singing and playing instruments at a very young age. Growing up in a family where music was an important part of life, they were exposed to a wide diversity of musical influences. The brothers were performing regularly by the time they were eleven and twelve years old, and they began their professional career in 1979. Jens’ and Uwe’s first public performances were as a duo, and in just a few years they were busking on the streets of cities throughout eastern and western Europe.

CBS Records contracted with Jens and Uwe when Jens was just seventeen years old, and shortly thereafter, the Krugers hosted a radio show on SRG SSR, the Swiss Public broadcast group. Several years later, the brothers teamed up with bass player Joel Landsberg, a native of New York City who also had a very extensive musical upbringing in classical and jazz music (studying with jazz great Milt Hinton), thus forming a trio that has been playing professionally together since 1995. Together, they established the incomparable sound that The Kruger Brothers are known for today. The trio moved to the United States in 2002 and is based in Wilkesboro, NC.

Since their formal introduction to American audiences in 1997, The Kruger Brothers’ remarkable discipline, creativity and their ability to infuse classical music into folk music has resulted in a unique sound that has made them a fixture within the world of acoustic music. The honesty of their writing has since become a hallmark of the trio’s work.

In their ever-expanding body of work – Jens Kruger (banjo and vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar and lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass and vocals) – The Kruger Brothers personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Their original music is crafted around their discerning taste, and the result is unpretentious, cultivated, and delightfully fresh.

In addition to their regular concert schedule, The Kruger Brothers perform these classical pieces regularly with select symphony orchestras and string quartets throughout the country.

Through their numerous CD releases, radio and television performances, lectures, and collaborative efforts, The Kruger Brothers’ powerful artistic statement continues to inspire and enlighten audiences and musicians around the world.

“I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them. They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with only voice and guitar, with songs that possess a mysterious and soulful magic.” ~ Pat Sansone of Wilco and Autumn Defense

“Mesmerizing… cinematic folk-jazz” ~ ASCAP’s Playback Magazine.

Max Hatt / Edda Glass features ethereal guitar, an unmistakeable voice, and the duo’s award-winning Jazz Americana compositions. “We want to write about a world both intimate and vast, about little people on great plains,” says Glass. “Plus sometimes we like to throw in a little Bossa Nova.”

In 2014, Max Hatt / Edda Glass played at NYC’s Lincoln Center where they won grand-prize at the Mountain Stage / NewSong Contest and generally defied categorization. 2015 saw the them tour coast to coast, from Sundance Film Festival’s ASCAP Music Cafe to a headlining concert at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. NewSong Recordings will release their debut album, Ocean of Birds, on May 20th 2016, produced by Pat Sansone of Wilco & Autumn Defense. They have this to say: We’re interested in stories. How a melody comes home soundly to a place it didn’t grow up. How a major chord troubles your sleep with minor insinuations. How we look to the horizon, no matter how wide the plain between us.

“…like paintings or hand printed photographs that speak and sway. The material is hypnotic and comforting, because it is crafted with patience, wit and seasoned love.” ~ Lizz Wright

“Beautiful music that is subtly poignant, elegantly funky, and haunting without trying to be. Their songs are direct yet often take unexpected and colorful harmonic twists and turns, delighting the ear.” – Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers)

Oceans Of Birds, the debut album from Jazz-Americana duo Max Hatt / Edda Glass is out now via NewSong Recordings. Of their music Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense) says, “I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them. They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with songs that possess a mysterious and soulful magic.” You can download the record here: bit.ly/ocean-of-birds-itunes

To celebrate the release, the Sante Fe-based duo will tour nationwide this summer with shows in New York, Baltimore, Chicago, Burlington, etc. See below for a full list of U.S. tour dates.

Recently, The Huffington Post premiered their single “Wanted,” while Relix premiered the official music video for “Crossing Over.” Watch the video here: http://bit.ly/1S8Il0O

Ocean Of Birds was produced and mixed by Sansone and Josh Shapera (Liam Hayes, The Autumn Defense) with Gar Ragland (Arthur Alligood, Chris Velan) and was recorded at Asheville, North Carolina’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios. Of the album Hatt says, “The amazing [part] about the making of Ocean of Birds is that we all found each other. That Pat Sansone heard and dug our compositions. I think its a testament to the power of music to find an audience, if it can be heard. And in the process we all created a unique hybrid that bridges the gap between jazz harmony, literate lyrics and people’s ears. Pat was a big part of that.” Glass adds, “We want to write about a world both intimate and vast, about little people on Great Plains.”

Max Hatt / Edda Glass

After playing Bossa Nova in Montana for ten years, Max Hatt / Edda Glass emerged with their original music for a grand prize win at the 2014 NewSong Competition, held at Lincoln Center in New York City. “Max Hatt / Edda Glass often defied categorization,” said Gar Ragland, the contest’s director, calling them, “arguably the most distinctive finalist act let alone winner we’ve ever had.” Last winter, they played at the 2015 Sundance Film Fest, where ASCAP’s Playback Magazine described their sets as “mesmerizing cinematic folk jazz.”

Glass got her start singing Bossa Nova in Montana—as she likes to say, “There’s something poignant about singing Girl from Ipanema when it’s negative forty out.” Hatt grew up in the Chicago-land area, studying jazz guitar in Indiana University’s David Baker program, Michigan State and in classes led by Pat Metheny, Julian Lage and Lee Ritenour.
