#WeAreNewSong :: David Robert King

Every year, NewSong receives countless song submissions from talented artists across North America and beyond. Only a handful are chosen each year as finalists. And while not all of these finalists take home the grand prize, all of them leave a lasting impression on the NewSong team. Supporting and fostering new and as-yet-undiscovered musicians is what NewSong is all about, which is why we aim to celebrate past finalists and winners in our new video series, #WeAreNewSong. This week, we’re featuring David Robert King. 

 

 

David Robert King, talented songwriter and 2017 NewSong Music Competition finalist, is certainly an artist to get to know. His 2017 album, Idaho, was produced by Darryl Neudorf (Neko Case, The New Pornographers, Sarah McLachlan) and has been met with great critical acclaim for its unique sound.

No Depression has praised the musician, calling Idaho “good for the soul,” full of “folk-drenched songs of the world class order.” King recently performed at the 30A Songwriters Festival, alongside Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Mary Gauthier, and others. We caught up with David this week to find out what is new in his career, how his experience with NewSong has impacted him and to get his thoughts on songwriting. Stay tuned this fall for a single David recorded with fellow NewSong finalist and 2017 Grand Prize Winner Crys Matthews. 

NewSong: How would you describe your songwriting style?

David Robert King: For me, songwriting is both a therapy and an itch. Sometimes I need to sit down and write in order to maintain sanity, other times an idea, tune, or phrase just keeps bugging me until I give it time and space, then the itch is scratched.

It has been almost a year since the 2017 NewSong Music Competition. How did your experience with NewSong impact you?

NewSong has been a place to build community. The group is both incredibly talented and incredibly kind… a rare combination. I’m only human, and NewSong’s recognition is validating and encouraging. Playing at Lincoln Center in New York, recording at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville — pretty awesome stuff.

What is coming up for you that readers should know about?
 
I have some exciting shows coming up in the Southeast, and I’m really excited about the songwriting workshop I am doing with City Song School and Jennifer Knapp (one of my favorite writers) in Decatur, GA

NewSong songwriters live and perform across the continent and beyond, their work spans multiple genres, and these artists are always putting out new material. To keep track of all their news and upcoming shows, we will be highlighting NewSong artists in our weekly roundup. 

We’ve put together a list of five shows, publications and recordings we think you should be paying attention to this week. 

 

1. David Robert King – #WeARENEWSONG video out today

David Robert King — a finalist in last year’s NewSong Music Competition whose striking songwriting has been compared to Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits — is featured in our video series, #WeAreNewSong. In the short video, King discusses his experience with the NewSong competition, as well as his musical inspirations and songwriting process. 

King was the runner up in last year’s NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition in New York City. Since then, he has released a new record, Idaho. This past summer, King recorded a single “Have Mercy” with NewSong Grand Prize Winner Crys Matthews and producer Gar Ragland.

2. Beth Snapp – Oct. Tour Dates

Beth Snapp is keeping busy after the release of her 2018 album, Don’t Apologize. This week, you will find the songwriter with her band at the Music on the Laurel Creek series Tuesday Oct. 9 in Damascus, VA and the Annual Harvest Boogie hosted by Jump TN on Friday Oct. 12.

Meanwhile, Don’t Apologize, recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios with producer Gar Ragland, continues to gather positive critical acclaim. Listen to the new album on Spotify. 

 

 

3. Farewell Milwaukee – Flannel Roots Music & Beer festival 

Farewell Milwaukee is a mainstay of the Minneapolis music scene since 2008. The band embraces the role that their Midwestern towns have played in shaping them artistically, garnering them fans through their authentic lyrics, lush vocal harmonies, and an honest sincerity at live shows. Farewell Milwaukee released their fourth full-length album, FM, in September 2018.

The band will perform at the the Flannel Roots Music & Beer Festival in Minnetonka, Minnesota Saturday Oct. 13. Listen to Farewell Milkwaukee on Spotify. 

 

4. NEwsong Recordings spotlight: Rachael Kilgour “Rabbit in the Road”

After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Rachael Kilgour is gearing up to release her next album, Game Changer, early next year. This week, we suggest revisiting Rachael’s first release with NewSong Recordings, Rabbit in the Road.

Billboard calls it “A heartfelt slice of master crafted indie folk, brimming with the battle-tested capacity to endure the worst in others. There’s a steadfast confidence to her voice, which lingers around the guitar and keystrokes like smoke above a dying fire.”

5. JBird Shogren – Wild west songwriters festival

Shogren is a 2016 NewSong Music Competition finalist and has performed at Lincoln Center in NYC, as well as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. as part of the NewSong Music Series. He was also in the studio earlier this year at Echo Mountain Recording with producer Gar Ragland, tracking material for his new solo project Horse Machine (stay tuned for more on that in future roundups).

Shogren will perform at the Wild West Songwriters Festival in Deadwood, SD, Oct. 12 and 13. For more information on the festival, visit the website. 

6. SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN FOR 2018 NEWSONG MUSIC PERFORMANCE & SONGWRITING COMPETITION 


Now in its 17th year, the NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition is one of North America’s premier showcases of emerging performers and songwriters across an array of genres.The final deadline to enter this year’s competition is Sunday, November 4.

1. Ordinary Elephant – new album announced, kickstarter in progress

 

If they aren’t already, Ordinary Elephant should be in your music rotation. After being awarded the Folk Alliance International Artist of the Year award, the 2016 LEAF Contest finalists recently announced that they’re heading in to the studio with producer Neilson Hubbard to record their next album. 

Hubbard has produced albums by Mary Gauthier, Sam Baker, Glen Phillips, and Amy Speace. “After meeting with him,” says the band, “we’re confident that our visions are aligning, and that he’s going to help us serve these songs, giving them only what they are asking for. This means that overall this record will be fairly stripped down, highlighting the emotional intensity of our live performances.”

2. Andy palmer – new music video For “The Switch”

 

Andy Palmer announced the release of a new video for his song “The Switch,” created by award winning digital, animation and claymation artist John Grigsby. The striking video has been accepted in film festivals across the country. In addition to the film release, Andy announced his indefinite hiatus from the music industry and invites fans to join him at his last show (for now) at the Walnut Room in Denver, CO on Oct. 20. 

Andy Palmer and Brie Capone shared a bill at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in August 2017 as part of NewSong’s ‘Exploration of Song’ series there. Watch a video of Brie and Andy singing Andy’s song “Off” on YouTube.

3. Brie capone – Carole King Tribute oct. 7

Brie Capone is keeping busy this fall with a full lineup of shows. This week, you will find her at Isis Music Hall on Oct. 7th, performing songs from Carole King’s “Tapestry” album, with Asheville musician Jesse Barry and others.

Recorded and released in 1971, “Tapestry” is one of the best selling albums of all time. It received four Grammy Awards in 1972. With an all-star lineup of musicians including Peggy Ratusz, Kelly Jones, Aaron Price, Zack Page, Micah Thomas, Dean Mitchell, & Kate Kinney Barber, this is bound to be another night to remember.

4. NewSong recordings spotlight: Kelly English

Kelly English is a singer-songwriter from Hartford, Connecticut. A finalist in the 2015 NewSong Songwriting Contest, Kelly traveled to Asheville to compete at the LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition. There, she found a home at Echo Mountain Recording Studios and partnered with Gar Ragland and NewSong Recordings to record  and release “City Limits.” The debut album was released a year ago, in October 2017.

Kelly will return to Asheville later this month to record songs for her follow up album, and we can’t wait to hear what’s next from this talented artist.

1. ROSE COUSINS – on tour in Alberta

Halifax, Nova Scotia-based artist Rose Cousins is on tour this week in Alberta, and will continue play shows into the fall. Performances this week include the Theatre Junction Grand on Sept. 27th in Calgary; Arden Theatre in St. Albert on Sept. 28th; The Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod on Sep 29th; and The Communitea Cafe in Canmore Sept. 30th. For American fans, the songwriter will stop in Massachusetts and Connecticut in October. Visit her website for a full list of tour dates. 

Cousins’ 2012 album We Have Made A Spark won a JUNO Award, 3 East Coast Music Awards, a Canadian Folk Music Award, was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize, and made picks/best of lists in USA Today, NPR Music and Oprah Magazine. Her music has found its way into several TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy.

2. Brie Capone – Asheville Masonic Temple Show Sept. 29

 

Brie Capone was a finalist in our 2017 NewSong Songwriting Competition and the winner of the 2017 LEAF Singer Songwriter Contest. This soulful and accomplished songwriter has been playing shows around the US after the release of her 2018 album, If I Let You In.

3. Rachael Kilgour – “Game Changer” PRE-Order EXCEEDS goal on Kickstarter

The pre-order campaign for Kilgour’s forthcoming album, Game Changer, met its goal on Kickstarter last week. Two hundred and twenty-one backers pre-ordered $8,281 to help bring the project to life. The 2015 NewSong Music Contest winner, Kilgour has performed at Lincoln Center in New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the prestigious ASCAP Music Café at the Sundance Film Festival. 

Rachael’s new EP, Game Changer, is produced and mixed by NewSong co-founder and director Gar Ragland and recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, NC. “I believe in what I do as a songwriter and as a human being committed to connecting with others and building emotional literacy and resiliency through stories and songs,” says Kilgour of her work.

4. Wilder Adkins – “Side by side” featured on “Starbucks folk” spotify playlist

Wilder Adkins’ song “Side by Side” is featured on the “Starbucks Folk” playlist on Spotify.  “Side by Side” is a tribute to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and a reflection on the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing. According to Adkins, it’s “an anthem for peace and a call to keep hoping and never give up fighting darkness with the power of light.” 

Wilder finds himself in good company on the popular playlist, among an eclectic mix of artists including John Prine, Shakey Graves and Laura Veirs.

1. Rachael Kilgour – game changer Kickstarter Campaign ends Sept. 23

Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesota-born, Boston-based songwriter and performing artist whose sincere, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. As the 2015 grand prize winner of the NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition, Rachael has performed at Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival.

2. Beth snapp – Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Festival Sept. 21-22

Beth Snapp is keeping busy in the wake of her recent album release, Don’t Apologize. Catch her at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Festival on September 21 and 22.

From the Festival: “The Festival hosts over 130 bands on 20 stages in downtown Bristol during the third weekend in September. Attendance has grown to approximately 45,000. Among its many accolades the Festival has been named as one of Rolling Stone’s ‘Top 20 Tours and Festivals,’ and has won a Grand Pinnacle Award from the International Festival and Events Association.”

3. Wilder Adkins – praise for “Marietta”

Wilder Adkins continues to garner praise from critics for his recent single release, “Marietta,” which takes its inspiration from the Bruce Springsteen classic “I’m Goin’ Down.” This time, the review comes from York Calling. “It may be a cover,” says the reviewer, “but Adkins has managed to make the track truly his own.”

4. Brie Capone – Two old hippies Sept. 21

Montreal singer-songwriter and producer, Chris Velan, has always been crossing borders with his mix of world music-influenced, singer-songwriter pop. NewSong has had the pleasure to work with Chris Velan on past albums including, Glow (2016) and The Long Goodbye (2013).

2. Wilder Adkins – “Dancing in the Dark”

Wilder Adkins has a new single out that should be in your rotation! Glide Magazine premiered the tune, writing, “[the song] flirts with glitchy Radiohead narratives, before Adkins offers his sincere vocals to complete the picture – giving this Springsteen classic its own personality.”

3. Carly Taich – “My Own Stages”

Carly Taich, winner of this year’s LEAF Singer-Songwriter Contest, has released a new single titled, “My Own Stages.” The Mountain Xpress quotes Carly speaking to the inspiration behind the song: “I have a love-hate relationship with the technology I survive on, and I find myself wishing to experience, for even a day, this romantic past I’m not so sure ever existed.”

4. Max Hatt // Edda Glass – upcoming performances

Max Hatt // Edda Glass will be performing September 12 in Idaho Falls, ID at the Carr Gallery at the Willard Arts Center presented by the Eastern Idaho Jazz Society and again on September 14  in  Cody, WY at The Cody Theatre presented by the Park County Arts Council. 5. Blue Yonder – feature in Charleston Gazette-Mail

The Charleston Gazette-Mail featured The Blue Yonder this week. “As supergroups go,” says writer Billy Lynch, “you’d be hard-pressed to find one as unassuming as Charleston’s Blue Yonder.”

Watch live webcast of Crys Matthews performing at the Kennedy Center today, Aug. 22

NewSong Music is honored to partner with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to present the 2017 NewSong Music Competition grand prize winner Crys Matthews at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. 

“It is such an honor to be playing the prestigious Kennedy Center,” says Matthews of her upcoming performance. “There isn’t much that I get to write or call home to my mom about that makes her cheer the way she did the night I won the 2017 NewSong Music and Performance Competition, but this did it. To know I am getting to sing my songs on the same stage as so many of my songwriting heroes means so much to me. To be able sing a song inspired by our former First Lady Michelle Obama in our nation’s Capital will make the night that much sweeter for me, personally.” 

Matthews’s performance is featured as part of the Kennedy Center’s free daily series on its Millennium Stage in the Grand Foyer. Watch the live webcast of her performance this Wednesday, August 22 at 6:00 PM EDT.

Wilder Adkins releases new single, “Marietta”

“Marietta” is the latest single from 2016 NewSong Music Competition Grand Prize Winner, Wilder Adkins.

 
Wilder Adkins, Alabama-based musician and 2016 Grand Prize Winner of the NewSong Music Competition, released a new single Friday, August 17. The song is called “Marietta,” and we asked Adkins to share his thoughts on the song’s meaning, his process and what is coming up next for this talented and prolific songwriter. 
 
NewSong: Could you tell us a little bit about the meaning behind the song? 
Adkins: “Marietta” is about someone who has to end a relationship because they know their partner isn’t happy and probably never will be — because they’re always chasing that next big thrill. The singer is “taking a fall,” knowing that he will be blamed, and that’s why he sings “I’m going down.”
 
Was there any particular impetus for writing it?
I was working on some Springsteen covers for a tribute show that I played over in Atlanta, and this was the next song that I wrote. So I think it was influenced a bit by that process and listening to some Heartland rock songs, but it has my own melancholy spin on things.
 

WIlder Adkins and producer Gar Ragland are currently working on a two volume recording project that was recently recorded at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording Studio.

In what ways has your songwriting process or point of view changed over time?
I think in some ways I have gotten faster at songwriting. I still take a while to finish most songs, but mainly because I don’t have a lot of free time to work on them. This song came pretty quickly, and I think part of that is because I’ve learned to stop trying to edit myself before putting the words down, as opposed to moving on and editing afterwards.  
 
What musical collaborations are featured on the recording?
My good friend Molly Parden sang harmonies with me. She is a great songwriter in her own right, but also performs frequently with notables such as Peter Bradley Adams, Matthew Perryman Jones, and David Ramirez. A Birmingham native, Jamison Harper, played the Baritone sax. Jamison is a visual artist, as well, so he is a very multi-talented guy. 
 
What’s next for you in your music career?
After this song releases, I am putting out a cover of Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” next month. I’m also looking forward to finishing up a recording project at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville this fall.

Crys Matthews and David Robert King team up to record new single

Finalists often tell us that one of the best perks about being a part of the NewSong Songwriting Competition is having the opportunity to meet likeminded songwriters. The spirit of the competition is far from cut-throat and often opens doors for collaborations and networking, which was certainly the case for songwriters and 2017 finalists Crys Matthews and David Robert King. The duo met at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in late July with NewSong founder Gar Ragland to record a new single, “Have Mercy.” 

We took some time to talk to the artists about their songwriting processes and experiences with collaboration. 

Q&A with Crys Matthews and David Robert King 

NewSong: How did this song collaboration come about? 

David: I woke up one morning with the first verse running through my head. I had been digesting the 24-hour news cycle for too many days in a row and was crushed. Specifically, by the separation of families along our southern border. This was different than my usual introspective and dark stuff, it had an inherent hope to it. I immediately thought of my immensely talented friend Crys, who I met through the NewSong community. I knew her voice and perspective would take the song where it needed to go.

Crys: David and I met during the NewSong finals back in November. I loved his style and especially his voice (it’s so reminiscent of Tom Waits) and his guitar playing is incredible. We kept in touch after that night at Lincoln Center in the hopes of getting to become better friends and share a show or two. He reached out to me not long after the family separation crisis started and sent a snippet of the song. We went back and forth — adding, subtracting, shaping, reshaping — until it felt like we had it right.

How would you describe the meaning and/or impetus behind “Have Mercy”?

Crys: My mom, who is a preacher, talks to me all the time about how hard she is praying for our country these days with all of the turmoil and despair that seems to be running rampant. The song to me just feels like that prayer, a sincere hope that we will get through this chapter the way we got through the 50s and 60s and 9/11 and countless wars and everything else that America has had to endure and overcome.
 
David: [The song expresses] my thoughts on what America can be if we turn on all the lights, expose the shadows, and put down our remote controls and iPhones and stand up together against injustice. We need to face our demons, current and past, and make things right. We need mercy
 
What has it been like to work together on this project? 
 
David: Crys got it right away. We didn’t discuss the song or the message. I just sent her what I had (first verse and chorus) and she went to work. It usually takes me months or years to write a tune. Doing this with Crys, it took days.
 
Crys: It has been wonderful! It’s only my second co-write, and I’m so grateful to David for this chance to help bring some tenderness and beauty to people.

#WeAreNewSong :: Andrea Lopez

Miami, Florida’s Andrea Lopez, performing as a finalist last November in the 16th annual NewSong Music Competition finals at New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Every year, NewSong receives countless song submissions from talented artists across North American and beyond. Only a handful are chosen each year as finalists. And while not all of these finalists take home the grand prize, all of them leave a lasting impression on the NewSong team. Supporting and fostering new and as-yet-undiscovered musicians is what NewSong is all about, which is why we aim to celebrate past finalists and winners in our new video series, #WeAreNewSong.

Andrea Lopez is our first artist featured in the series, and she is no doubt an artist to watch. This 24-year-old, bilingual songwriter from Miami self-released her last album “Echoes” in April 2017. The EP consisted of five original songs, which ranked highly on the iTunes Charts (#1 Top EPS & Singles, #5 Top Latin Albums, #8 Top Singer/Songwriter Albums) and earned her placements on numerous Spotify playlists. Additionally, her song “Por Ti” was awarded as a finalist in the Latin category of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.
