NEWSONG FINALIST KRISTIAN PHILLIP VALENTINO TO RELEASE NEW EP ON NEWSONG RECORDINGS

Thursday, July 6th, 2023

Kristian Phillip Valentino, a 2022 NewSong Music Finalist, has been logging studio hours for his forthcoming album, Happily Ever After. This is a five-song collection of love songs, written for Valentino’s wife Holly. It’s also a follow up to his last album, For Everything, There is a Season, which ended with a break-up song. The EP will be released on the NewSong Recordings label on Friday, Sept. 22 and the first single  drops Thursday, July 27.

Valentino says that many listeners don’t know that the break-up on Season was real — and it was with Holly. Seasons was written and recorded after the couple parted ways, and for Valentino the project was a way to process the heartbreak. But that’s not how real-life worked out. Kristian and Holly found their way back to each other and are now happily married. That warranted a new collection of songs … though Valentino needed a nudge.

“When Holly and I got married, she wanted me to write a song for the ceremony,” he recalls. “I was pretty taken aback that she asked me to do that. I’d recorded it on my phone, honestly, and we played it before the wedding.” But that song, “Forever with you,” was the catalyst for finishing the couple’s story in verse.

Valentino came to Citizen Studios, located within Citizen Vinyl in downtown Asheville. The studio has historic ties to the Asheville music scene, as well as to Western North Carolina radio, and is helmed by Gar Ragland, the president and co-founder of NewSong Music, and founder and CEO of Citizen Vinyl. Initially Valentino had three songs, but he told Ragland that he wanted to record five.

The original set of songs included album opener “Out of My Head,” about the first time you see that person with whom you fall in love, and end track “Find You Sooner.” The two additional tunes both came in a surprising way to Valentino who admits he usually takes a while to write a song.

“It was midnight, I had my guitar in my hand, and I came across these chords,” he remembers. All of a sudden, the idea for “Taking My Time” came to him, and he completed it within 30 minutes. A few nights later the same thing happened. That time though “Stick Around” emerged as a cowrite with Holly. “We’d never done anything like that before,” Valentino says.

The musician started writing songs after the passing of his father and for years he used songwriting as a tool to process hard times. Now, he says, he’s able to balance the sad songs with happy ones.

Happily Ever After will be released on Friday, Sept. 22. Stay tuned for details on a record release show in Asheville. The EP’s first single, “Taking My Time,” drops Thursday, July 27. Follow @KPVSongs and @NewSongMusic to listen!

Meet the 2022 Finalists: Kristian Phillip Valentino

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2022

Kristian Phillip Valentino currently calls Asheville, N.C. home. His musical palette falls between the lines of indie folk, singer-songwriter and Americana. His lyrics are a healing balm from the daily struggle as they wash over you with a deep reverence. Kristian (aka KPV) was also a finalist at the 2022 LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, a collaboration between NewSong Music and LEAF Global Arts.

NewSong Music: What sort of music was playing in your house when you were growing up?

A man in a green blazer holds a large yellow flower and smiles.Kristian Phillip Valentino: I grew up in a strict Pentecostal/Christian household so not much secular music was playing, mostly worship/Christian music. I did find MTV at a very young age though! So I was introduced to hip-hop and Nirvana when I was like 5 or 6.

What inspired you to become a songwriter?

I started writing songs in August of 2010. Within that one month, my dad passed away suddenly, I lost my job, and ended up homeless living in my car, and got broken up with in a relationship I really cared about at the time. I was devastated and started writing some of my first songs in the car. I was able to find my songs as a healing balm for myself. I just hope it can be that for others.

Do you have any recent or forthcoming projects to tell us about?

Currently I am working on a four-song EP which is being produced by Gar Ragland at Citizen Studios. I’m hoping to release in the Spring of 2023.

Leading up to the 2022 NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition finals, we’re showcasing tracks from our finalists.

The 2022 Finalists are:

The Singer and the Songwriter (Rachel Garcia and Thu Tran; Oakland, CA ) — Rachel and Thu met and began writing and performing music together in 2006. This year they were named as a finalist in the prestigious Grassy Hill New Folk Song Competition for Emerging Folk Artists at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Cozi Anda Flounder (Cozi and Ezra Vancil; Dallas, TX) — Father-daughter Americana-ish country duo. This self-described cosmic country / Americana-ish outfit sounds itself with a group of lifelong music friends.

AC Sapphire (Portland, OR)— Ethereal folk-rock. Her cosmic sound blends disparate elements into an ethereal folk rock while her strong voice shakes listeners awake as she spins her passionate, dust-blasted tales.

Indus Adams (San Antonio, TX) — Indie-pop. Indus Adams, aka Devin Castleton, used Covid quarantine to take a deep dive into songwriting and recording. He is currently at work on his debut album.

Mikalyn (Guelph, Ontario) — Alt-pop. As an established singer-songwriter her journey had a significant boost when a Brazilian record label discovered her original, piano-driven songs on Soundcloud and offered to transform them into EDM hits, resulting in millions of streams.

Justin Cross (Pelham, AL) — Americana. Justin Cross is a singer-songwriter and self-described “noise-maker.” Though his songs are based in American tradition, he hopes they can connect with a global audience.

Lua Flora (Evan Button; Weaverville, NC) — Beach-pop. The Asheville, NC-based group’s sun-kissed melodies are rooted in the harmonies of Appalachia, rhythms of the West Indies, and lyricism of American folk.

Kristian Phillip Valentino (Asheville, NC) — Indie-folk. KPV’s musical palette falls between the lines of indie folk, singer-songwriter and Americana. His lyrics are a healing balm from the daily struggle as they wash over you with a deep reverence. Kristian was also a finalist at the 2022 LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, a collaboration between NewSong Music and LEAF Global Arts.

The finalists, selected from advance online submissions from across North America and beyond, will bring their musical chops to Asheville to perform, compete, and connect with one another. The concert takes place at Citizen Vinyl on Saturday, Dec. 3, 7 PM.

Tickets are $50 General Admissions and $125 VIP.

A panel of music industry judges will select one grand prize winner who will receive a fully funded six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Citizen Studios, plus 300 vinyl records pressed at Citizen Vinyl, and a featured, paid performance at Arts Brookfield’s Summer Concert Series in New York City in the summer of 2023.

Q+A with LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition Finalist Kristian Phillip Valentino

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022

Kristian Phillip Valentino is a solo acoustic, singer-songwriter born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and now residing in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. His musical palette falls between the lines of indie folk, singer-songwriter and Americana. Fans of Gregory Alan Isakov, Iron and Wine and Jason Isbell will feel comfortable here. His lyrics are a healing balm from the daily struggle as they wash over you with a deep reverence.

After the passing of his father, ending up homeless and being broken up with all within one month, Kristian began writing songs in the summer of 2010, as a way to start processing all he’d been through and begin the healing process.

NewSong Music: What inspired you to enter the NewSong Contest?

KVP: I’ve entered the past few years and I’ve heard great things from prior winners. The exposure alone is worth the submission.

How did the pandemic impact you as an artist (for better or worse)?

I took the pandemic as a sign to work on personal growth and my mental health overall. I believe because I did this my songwriting and personal life have greatly improved. Some of my best songs have come from this time.

In what ways does the craft of songwriting still surprise you?

I find myself being surprised all the time. Especially when a melody pops up over chords I’ve been playing over and over through the years. It’s like the songs find me first and I just follow along to the finish line.
