2. Beth Snapp – Model City 11/3

Beth Snapp continues to perform in support of her recent EP release, Don’t Apologize. This week, you can catch her at Model City Tap House in Kingsport, TN on Saturday, Nov. 3. “To me, this EP is a continuation of a journey,” says Snapp. “My second project was largely an account of just coming out of a storm. I had survived, I knew things were going to get better, but there was some healing and processing to be done. As time passed, and I did the work to heal, I emerged into a new place. I realized that surviving the storm wasn’t enough. I realized I was put on this Earth to do more than survive.”

3. Max Hatt / Edda Glass – Album spotlight

In honor of Max Hatt / Edda Glass recording a new album in Seattle this month, we would like to spotlight the Jazz-Americana duo’s previous album, Ocean of Birds. As grand prize winners of the international NewSong performance and songwriting competition, the duo’s prize included the recording of this album in April 2015 at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios.

”I was mesmerized from the first moment I heard them,” says album producer Pat Sansone (Wilco, The Autumn Defense) of their cinematic sound. “They have the ability to create a deep sonic landscape with only voice and guitar, with songs that posses a mysterious and soulful magic.”

4. Chris velan – “Amateur HOUr” launch show in Montreal

Chris Velan will play a show at Petit Campus in Montreal on Thursday Nov. 1 for the launch of his latest album, Amateur Hour. A reviewer from Exclaim! writes, “Amateur Hour gleams with thoughtful and crisp writing and explorative musical shifts.”

Weekly roundup: NewSong Artist News 10/15-10/21

Monday, October 15th, 2018

We love to keep up with our past NewSong Music Contest finalists and winners, and, over the years, we have amassed a busy and hardworking group of musicians we admire.

NewSong songwriters live and perform across the continent and beyond, their work spans multiple genres, and these artists are always putting out new material. To keep track of all their news and upcoming shows, we will be highlighting NewSong artists in our weekly roundup.

We’ve put together a list of five shows, publications and recordings we think you should be paying attention to this week.

1. David Robert King & Crys Matthews – “Have Mercy” video Release 10/19

Atlanta-based singer-songwriter and longstanding guitarist for Mary Gauthier, David Robert King, and Virginia-based singer-songwriter Crys Matthews are proud to announce a new collaboration, “Have Mercy.” The single, a response to family separation along the US southern border, is slated for release Friday, October 19..

“Have Mercy” was recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, NC and produced by Gar Ragland of NewSong Recordings. King and Matthews met as finalists last year in the esteemed NewSong Music Competition at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, where Matthews took the Grand Prize, and King was her runner-up. The songwriters kept in touch, and, less than a year later, they found themselves in Asheville, NC, recording the co-written single.

Look out for “Have Mercy” this Friday on your favorite music platform! In the meantime, listen to David Robert King and Crys Matthews on Spotify.

2. David berkeley – “This be dear to me” video release

David Berkeley recently released his shimmering lyric video for “This Be Dear
To Me” from his forthcoming EP The Faded Red And Blue, out November 2. The
imagery moving behind the words is a 40-foot watercolor painting by Santa Fe artist
Stan Berning that was used in the 2005 movie “Off The Map.” Berkeley’s eight-
year-old son Noah hand wrote the lyrics. PopMatters premiered the video, writing, “[This Be Dear To Me is] a hauntingly beautiful track that perfectly encapsulates all that David Berkeley does best.”

Berkeley has announced a Fall/Winter tour. See his website for confirmed dates. Listen to Berkeley on Spotify

3. Chris velan – “Amateur Hour” album release + “All time record” video

Chris Velan’s single “All Time Record” held the #7 spot on the CBC Music chart this month, the latest in a string of critical acclaim for Velan’s latest album, Amateur Hour. The album, released in September 2018, unfolds like a series of monologues in a one-act play where the characters are locked in a room and forced to respond and react to unexpected news, discovering that what they thought to be true of themselves was in fact not.

“Both in its title and lyrics, [“Amateur Hour”] came to encapsulate for me the themes of the album, representing them in this imagined, psychic space; Some dingy bar with a tiny stage where we all assemble as eternally helpless beginners, forever witnessing each other’s efforts to surrender to that inescapable truth,” says Velan.

Listen to Velan’s Amateur Hour on Spotify.

4.  Carly Taich – Upcoming performances

Asheville, NC-based indie folk artist Carly Taich has three great shows coming up in Asheville. The “fearless folk-pop” artist impressed judges at the 2018 LEAF Singer-Songwriter Competition, and her unique brand of “fearless folk-pop” earned her first place.

Taich will perform with fellow LEAF finalists My One and Only at Isis Music Hall Oct. 17; The Grey Eagle on Oct. 18, opening for Eilen Jewell; and at LEAF Oct. 20.

5. Music Modernization act signed into law

The Music Modernization Act was signed into law on October 11, which may have big consequences for those working in the music industry. It is a comprehensive bill that aims to reform the current music licensing system and give music creators an opportunity to obtain compensation that more accurately reflects the value of music.

Elizabeth Matthews, chief executive officer of ASCAP, says, “The MMA’s unanimous passage in the House and Senate proves that the power of music is a great unifier.”

Chris Velan - Glow video premier

Glow is the first album Velan’s made in his hometown since 2005. Co-produced with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat, Wolf Parade, Vic Chestnutt), Velan was joined in studio by an all-star band of local musicians; Jamie Thompson (Islands, The Unicorns) sitting at the drums, Morgan Moore (Barr Brothers, Blood and Glass) on bass, Max Henry (Suuns) playing keys, with Ariel Engle (AroarA) and Ngabo Kiroko (Dear Denizen) providing backup vocals.

Chris Velan - Glow Recording Console

Glow is the most accomplished, seamless mingling of Velan’s musical predilections – dancing from quiet, intimate passages, growing on pulse smooth rhythms. It’s a DNA that draws from his singer-songwriter craft as much as from West African guitar pop, vintage-era rock steady, and dance-floor eighties rock. The latter of which is embodied by the first single, “un-American Gothic”.

un-American Gothic Soundcloud

The songs on Glow want to pull back the curtain and let the light in. They’re about taking that long, unflinching look in the mirror, shattering mythologies, both personal and collective, and naming the lies that keep us caged. Whether refusing the clean-up job of a prophet in “Listen, Elijah”, or invoking grace in “Call Me Into Your Heart”, Velan’s latest collection of songs seems intent on finding joy at the end of the world – where no matter how frightening the outcome, the end is never the end, just a great new beginning.

It’s a path of inquiry that began for Velan on his previous album, The Long Goodbye, a raw and confessional reckoning with the break-up of a long-term relationship. While echoes of that ache remain in his latest release, Velan’s writing now looks forward with a faith in the blossoming power of love, connection, and the other intangibles that sustain life and will.

In addition to writing and recording Glow, Velan has kept busy in the studio with numerous other projects. Over the course of the last year he produced a debut album for Vermont chanteuse Francesca Blanchard, traveled to Haiti to record the Haitian collective Lakou Mizik’s first release, and joined Montreal afro-rock outfit Dear Denizen on guitar.

Glow is available for pre-order now on Pledge Music, along with other exclusive items.

Chris Velan’s The Long Goodbye Makes the Dirty Impound 25 Favorite Album list of 2013

Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

Congrats to NewSong Recordings artist, Chris Velan, whose most recent album The Long Goodbye was selected by as one of Dirty Impound‘s 25 Favorite Albums of 2013The album was produced and mixed by Iestyn Polson at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios.

Here’s what they had to say about it:

Chris VelanThe Long Goodbye

Top25_ChrisVelan

As exposed and brave as Joni Mitchell’s Blue or Elliott Smith’s Either/Or, the latest offering from Canadian songsmith Chris Velan tackles the tough but all too common experience of really, really loving someone and realizing you’re not the one for them. Where most of us crawl away to hide in the shadows, Velan took his guitar and notebook to scribble down some wisdom and helpful reflection from within the worst of times. To love and not be loved in return – at least not on the same level – is a pain worse than most blades or bullets can produce. But there is a balm in music that directly addresses the confusion, the lingering I-want-the-best-for-you ache, and undeniable hurt and sadness at knowing that despite one’s best efforts there’s no way to chisel one’s self into something other than what they are. The Long Goodbye is a succinct, beautifully drawn work that may well help folks move on from such hurts and hampering history. (DI Interview with Truth & Salvage Co.)

The album is in good company here; other albums on the list include releases by Akron/Family, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, Jason Isbell and Hiss Golden Messenger. “I’m punching above my weight on this list of truly amazing releases,” said Velan. “If you enjoy top-notch music writing and want to hear what gems you might have missed this past year (as I’m realizing, going through this list), you’ll want to check out this curatorial gift from Dennis Cook.”

In celebration of the release of his new album, The Long Goodbye, Montreal singer-songwriter Chris Velan has teamed up with CBC Music to stream the whole album and with Exclaim! to premiere the new video for album track “Hang On Tightly”.

“This is definitely not a summer beach album”, jokes Velan.  The Long Goodbye is a collection of songs that chart the emotional depths and shallows navigated in the aftermath of a relationship’s end.  While he may have masked his inner struggles with the pop sensibilities of Solidago (2009) and Fables For Fighters (2011), here he surrenders fully to the beat of heartbreak.

The result is a stripped-down, achingly intimate recording of eight songs that carry the listener through Velan’s most poignant work to date. “I didn’t allow myself anything to hide behind on this album. I couldn’t see any other way to do it.” Velan even wrote two songs on piano – a first for him – and performed them live in the studio as a way to push him into new emotive and musical territory and out of his comfort zone.

Continuing to break new ground, the video for “Hang On Tightly” is first time Velan has experimented with shooting and editing.  Filmed entirely on a GoPro throughout the course of one day and edited over the course of one night, Velan takes the audience along to explore comforting yet new territory, barefoot.  Velan says, “It took at least a week for my feet to fully heal and for me to be able to walk without limping.”

Chris Velan, “The Long Goodbye” featured by CBC Music as one of 8 recommended Canadian albums to hear this month

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

tlg slideshow 070213

Returning with his fifth full-length album, The Long Goodbye, Montreal’s Chris Velan sheds the sunnier, reggae/pop-sprinkled sounds on his earlier releases and lets heartbreak take the wheel. As you can probably guess, the record chronicles the aftermath of a failed relationship – a lonesome theme that reflected in Velan’s recording efforts, as he often relied on just himself and his instrument to capture the core of each song. Only a few fellow musicians appear on the album’s eight tracks, which were recorded in a former Methodist church in North Carolina.

Velan also tries his hand at crafting two songs on the piano, a departure from his usual songwriting efforts, but one that provides a bare-bones kind of beauty heard on the LP’s title track. – Emma Godmere, CBC Music

“This is definitely not a summer beach album”, jokes Chris Velan about his latest and fifth full-length outingThe Long Goodbye (NewSong Recordings). The Montreal singer-songwriter and world music producer has returned with a collection of songs that chart the emotional depths and shallows navigated in the aftermath of a relationship’s end.

Where Velan’s last two albums Solidago (2009) and Fables For Fighters (2011) grapple on different levels with themes of finding one’s place in the world, The Long Goodbye takes a different turn. And where Velan has admittedly masked his inner struggles with the buoyant sensibilities of pop, African and reggae-influenced arrangements on past albums, here he surrenders fully to the beat of heartbreak.

“I desperately needed to record these songs raw and unadorned so as to force myself to sit in that difficult space, as uncomfortable and difficult as that might have felt. The core of each song is a solo recording of my voice and my instrument, tracked in a cavernous live room at Echo Mountain Studios, a former African-American Methodist Church in Asheville, NC. It was a solitary affair with only a few other musicians involved. I did most of the overdubbing myself and kept things minimal, trying to make sure every part counted and had a reason to be there.”

Helping Velan on his journey was producer, Iestyn Polson (David Gray, Patti Smith) who also produced Fables. The two reunited in Asheville to record at Echo Mountain over the course of three weeks. Says Polson, “All I did was put up mics. The rest was down to Chris, really.” Velan offers another take on Polson’s contribution:  “From working together on Fables, Iestyn and I developed a level of trust and comfort that was necessary for an album this personal. As a talented producer and friend, he just naturally understood how to give me the space to pull these songs out in the way that I needed.”

The result is a stripped-down, achingly intimate recording of eight songs that carry the listener through Velan’s most poignant work to date. “I didn’t allow myself anything to hide behind on this album. I couldn’t see any other way to do it.” The guitarist even wrote two songs on piano – a first for him – and performed them live in the studio as a way to push him into new emotive and musical territory and out of his comfort zone.

Velan acknowledges, “There’s a part of me that just wanted to record these songs as keepsakes for myself and never release them – like photographs you put away in a drawer to revisit sometime later in your life. They felt too personal to share. But the feedback I’ve been getting from people is that they’re really connecting with the material. They hear a lot of solace and hope in there.  So maybe I wasn’t just writing this album for myself. “ And maybe that’s why catching Velan at the end of this long goodbye might be a good thing – a very good thing.

Announcing the pre-order of Chris Velan’s ‘The Long Goodbye’

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

Here’s today’s newsletter from NewSong Recordings artist Chris Velan, announcing the pre-order campaign launch of his forthcoming album ‘The Long Goodbye,’ which was produced and mixed by Iestyn Polson and recorded here at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville, NC.

Hello, Fine People-

I’m excited and nervous with anticipation to announce that the pre-order extravaganza for my new album, “The Long Goodbye,”  is hereby underway. The album will be officially released later on in the summer, but If you click here, you can be the first on your block to order and receive an advance copy of it on June 7. You have the choice between a regular and limited edition CD copy.  You can also order a sweet new t-shirt and print, or a bundle of all three. Any pre-order you make will give you an immediate free download of one of the songs from the album.

tlg_merch

Chris Velan - The Long GoodbyeBUT BEFORE YOU ORDER ANYTHING …. there are two things you should know: Each one of the limited edition CD sleeves and prints available for pre-order was lovingly silk-screened by the hand of my buddy and artist, Peaks (I assisted and tried not to spill the paint). The t-shirts were also hand-screened, but not by us. What this means is that no two limited edition CD sleeves and prints are exactly the same and each is its own objet d’art, so to speak. For that reason, I’ll be signing and numbering each one, which brings me to the second thing you need to know: There are only 248 limited edition CD’s, 39 posters and 45 t-shirts available (wish there were more but it took forever just to do that amount). Oh, and when you order a limited edition CD, you’ll be getting the choice of one of four different colour versions (yellow, green, pink, blue) that we created for the sleeve design. Kind of cool, right?  So, without putting too fine a point on this…get ordering!

Here’s a video about the making of this album. It was shot over three weeks in January down in Asheville, NC at Echo Mountain Recording Studio. It’ll give you an idea of how it all happened. I’ll be sharing some more videos with you (which I think you’ll dig) as we approach the album release date. And please share these links with anyone and everyone. You’re the “crowd” in my crowdsourcing and I truly need your help to spread the music.

Making of The Long Goodbye

Quick, final note. This album took a chunk out of me. The songs were written and recorded over some hard times. I tried to be as fearless and honest as I know how in presenting them. It’s a lonely listen but I hope there’s some sort of reward for you in there. Thank you for taking the time to let this album in – and for feeling whatever it is that it makes you feel. I’m very proud of it and looking forward to sharing it with you.
