NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Parker Ainsworth! The singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA will join his fellow finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.
Parker’s song “Running for so long” was recently featured in the film The Peanut Butter Falcon (video below). His blend of Western folk and soul music earned him the Grand Prize at NewSong’s 6th Annual LEAF Competition in 2018.
We asked Parker about his musical inspiration, songwriting process and what music news he has coming up in the Q&A below.
What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?
Too many to name, really. I grew up on blues and country (Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, BB King, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, the classics); lots of old rock (Stones, Beatles, specifically George Harrison and John Lennon made a huge impression on me); and Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan, of course, made an impact. Then I got deep into hip hop, house music and drum ‘n’ bass (Aphex Twin, Project Blowed, Tribe called Quest, Beastie Boys, Metalheads, Danny Tenaglia — pretty all over the place). Beck definitely blew my mind, and Nirvana as well. Lately, I’ve really enjoyed the older Staples singers recordings and a band called Tinariwen.
What is your songwriting process like?
Every song is different. Sometimes words come first; other times, it’s just a melody, or chord changes that evoke a feeling. The most important process for me these days is one of being present for the spark and not analyzing it until it’s become a fire. I’ve lost many potentially good ideas by judging them too early. Now I’m trying to be more curious and playful with things.
What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?
I’m humbled and grateful for the opportunity.
What music news would you like to share with readers?
The Peanut Butter Falcon, a gorgeously human film that I wrote a song for earlier this year is out now. I’m also playing a show at a The Troubadour in LA opening for an artist named Desi Valentine on Dec. 10. This will be my first time to play that venue, which is a legendary home for music in Los Angeles.

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Jae Jin! The singer-songwriter from Wolftown, VA will join his fellow finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.
Jae Jin is an independent global recording artist, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist & actor. He has self-released 3 albums: Kairos (2015), Baltimore Boulevard (EP, 2017), and his most recent album, an anthemic full-length titled ‘Letters and Drinks.‘
We asked Jae about his musical inspiration, songwriting process and what music news he has coming up in the Q&A below.
Connect with Jae Jin on his website, Facebook page, Twitter, and Instagram @JaeJinMusic. For more information on attending this event, please visit our Facebook event page. Purchase tickets here.
What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?
My biggest inspiration comes from the relationships with the people around me. The connections around me are necessary for the creation of words that sufficiently capture my thoughts, feelings, and struggles, which allows for others to connect to those feelings. My faith is also a major part of what influences my art, who I am, and why I create.
What is your songwriting process like?
My songwriting process is quite introspective and painstaking. The process is a long, arduous one. None of my songs actually come to a place where I think they are finished. Rather, I reach a certain point where I need to arbitrarily decide to allow for a song to be shared, at whatever point it is in regards to being completed. I always write my lyrics first, almost in the form of prose or poetry and slowly allow for them to come into the grooves and shapes of the top lines of the melodies once I introduce the written component to the music.
What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?
Honestly, surprised and humbled. I am excited to compete for the chance to represent NewSong as the grand prize winner. I am excited at the prospects to perform in places I wouldn’t have otherwise, and to be able to work at the Echo Mountain studios with talented creatives.
What music news would you like to share with readers?
My latest album, titled Letters and Drinks, is a full-length album I painstakingly created and released. Numerous songs from that album won songwriting awards including the 2019 John Lennon Songwriting Award, 2019 International Songwriting Competition, 2019 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA), 2018 SongDoor International Songwriting Competition, and the 2018 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Danielle Ponder! The singer-songwriter from Rochester, New York will join our other finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.
Danielle performs across the U.S. with her band, Danielle Ponder and the Tomorrow People. The group transcends musical genres with a blast of deep, powerful groove and soul. According to Ponder, soul is more than a sound. “Soul music is something you feel,” she says. “It gives you goose bumps.”
Beyond Danielle’s musical talent, she is a passionate defense attorney, speaker and Adjunct Professor. She has dedicated the past 15 years to organizing and speaking up for marginalized communities. She has worked on issues such as education funding, women’s rights, and has spent the past 8 years working for criminal justice reform.
We asked Danielle about her musical inspirations, songwriting process and what music news she has coming up in the Q&A below.
What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?
My biggest inspirations include Nina Simone and Lauryn Hill. I’m also inspired by the blues, the black experience, and the church.
What is your songwriting process like?
Every song has its own process. Sometime I am in the airport, a line will come to me, and before I land, I have a whole song. Other times, I want to write a song, but the exact words take forever to come. But mostly I hear the music first, and then I immediately know what words belong with the music.
What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?
I was excited!!! I am grateful and ready to meet new people!
What music news would you like to share with readers?
I am releasing a single on November 22nd. I will be releasing a new album in the spring.

NewSong is proud to introduce 2019 finalist Kelly Hoppenjans! The Nashville-based singer-songwriter will join our other finalists onstage at Isis Music Hall on Saturday Nov. 23 for the final competition.
Kelly creates empowering rock, combining the spirit of riot grrrl tinged with folky introspection. Her debut album, OK, I Feel Better Now, has garnered praise from NPR who has this to say about the new release: “Band-Aid Girl’ [off album OK, I Feel Better Now]… is an exhausted, exquisitely solitary dirge about settling into a romance that doesn’t quite work with a partner who isn’t quite emotionally available. The torch in Hoppenjans’ heart is reduced to a mere wisp, and she conveys its final embers with her lovely, plaintive alto.”
We asked Kelly about her musical inspirations, songwriting process and what news she has coming up in the Q&A below.
What are your most significant musical/artistic inspirations?
My biggest musical inspirations of all time are PJ Harvey, Bjork, Radiohead, and Joni Mitchell. Lately, I’ve been into Phoebe Bridgers, Angel Olsen, and Sleater-Kinney.
What is your songwriting process like?
It depends! Sometimes I get a hook that comes to me and gets me started. Other times, an idea, or sometimes a rhyme that I like, inspires a song. But when I sit down to write, I usually grab a guitar and start playing around with chords and singing over them.
What was your reaction to being named a NewSong finalist?
I was so floored! It’s such an honor to be able to participate, and I’m excited to get to perform with all the other finalists!
What music news would you like to share with readers?
I just released my debut full-length album, OK, I Feel Better Now, on Oct 18 and am going to be touring a lot this year to promote it.

NewSong is proud to have Alli Marshall as our host at the 18th Annual NewSong Competition on Saturday Nov. 23 at Isis Music Hall in Asheville, NC. Marshall is the longtime Arts editor for Asheville’s local alt-weekly newspaper, the Mountain Xpress.
We asked Marshall about her favorite songwriters, advice for this year’s batch of finalists and her personal relationship with the growing Asheville music scene.
NewSong: Name three of your all-time favorite songwriters. What do you think it is about their songwriting that grabs your attention?
Alli Marshall: I really don’t have any all-time favorites — I tend to go in phases and am always looking for for new songwriters to be moved and inspired by. That said, those who come quickly to mind are:
• Brittany Howard, who I think is such an important contemporary soul musician. Her writing is deeply poetic and true, but there’s also her sense of musicality and performance — not just what she says but how she says it.
• Taj Mahal has written some of my favorite songs, and whenever I go back to his catalog I’m never disappointed. He exudes deep joy within the idiom of the blues.
• Jeff Markham, who was an Asheville-based singer-songwriter. He was always reconfiguring his band and sound, and he eventually left music to be a full-time chef somewhere in the southwest. But I’m fortunate to have a stash of his records, including some unreleased songs, and I feel them deeply. I wanted to mention Jeff because a musician doesn’t have to “make it” to be connect to a listener.
How would you describe your relationship with Asheville music scene? (I’m of course thinking of your role as Arts editor at the Mountain Xpress but also of your personal experience as a music lover living in this ever-changing city.)
One thing I’ve said about Asheville for years is that we, as listeners, are fortunate to be in community with and to have relationships with the folks whose bands we support. Not to downplay the magic of a major show with lights and costumes and whatever, but some of the most special and memorable experience I’ve had with music were when I knew the band and was in a small room and witnessed the moment when the performers and audiences synched up. That gorgeous, golden flow, or giving and receiving. That exchange of energy and co-creation of art … I live for that.
You were also involved in the LEAF NewSong contest this spring. Any advice for this new batch of contestants based off that experience?
Be authentic. Be well-rehearsed, have a plan and play your best songs, but also really be grounded in the room. Take a moment onstage to exhale and get super present. And then remember to introduce your songs! That’s a nice way to connect with the audience, but it also shows professionalism and care for craft.
What is the last album you listened to?
This week I’ve been going back and forth between Son Little’s new EP, “invisible,” and “It Rains Love” by Lee Fields & The Expressions.
In addition to serving as Arts editor at the Mountain Xpress, Alli Marshall is a writer and artist in her own right. Check out Alli’s work on her website.
NewSong is proud to announce that Mel Bryant — winner of the 2018 NewSong Competition — will return to Asheville this November as a guest performer for this year’s final competition.
The 18th NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition final event takes place at Isis Music Hall on Saturday, November 23. Tickets available here.
We are thrilled to have Bryant return to the Isis stage. We recently asked the artist about her music career post-win, as well as her advice for the new group of finalists.
“Focus less on yourself and more on who you’re surrounded by,” says Bryant. “The best thing about the NewSong Competition, aside from the amazing prizes and the beautiful show that’s put on for the finale, is the community created by all the wonderful musicians that have come through this program.”
NewSong: It’s been a year since you won the 2018 NewSong competition! Could you give us the highlight reel of what you have been up to?
Mel Bryant: Since winning the 2018 NewSong Competition, there’s been a great many amazing opportunities provided by NewSong, and truthfully most, if not all, of the highlights for the year have been thanks to NewSong. Performing at Sundance Film Festival in January was both musically inspiring and environmentally thrilling, from the beautiful snow kissed slopes and the exhilarating movie screenings to the magnificent people that we met and performed for along the way. Over the summer, we were able to build not one but TWO full tours from Nashville to New York City, with Arts Brookfield shows at the center of both, providing incredible stages, amazing sound, and wonderful audiences that often returned for multiple dates of our tours! Because of those NYC shows, I’ve been hearing from international fans asking about new music and when they’ll hear from us again.
That being said, we’ve made serious strides in our own studio in Nashville for our debut album as a band, and we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. We hope to have the album set for release in January, with a single coming out very soon. We’ve had dozens of successful shows and lots of wonderful times making new music and meeting new collaborators, and we are especially excited to meet and hear the finalists this year. I’m sure it’ll be another highlight to add to the reel!
How did winning the NewSong competition affect you personally? How has it affected your career?
Winning the NewSong competition was an immensely needed confidence boost in a time when I can personally get mired in self criticism of my music and the value of my art. It feels so wonderful to know there are really amazing people in the NewSong family that are rooting for me and helping to bolster my belief in myself. It has given me so much freedom and power to carry on making more music and consistently improving and honing my craft in order to present the best version of my music when we go to record the NewSong EP. we’ve been looking forward to it all year and we cannot wait to get into Echo Mountain and lay down our newest, best songs.
What advice do you have for this year’s finalists?
My advice to this year’s finalists is to focus less on yourself and more on who you’re surrounded by. The best thing about the NewSong Competition, aside from the amazing prizes and the beautiful show that’s put on for the finale, is the community created by all the wonderful musicians that have come through this program. Collaboration is the heart of the greatest music I know, and even if it’s just a source of inspiration or a new cowriter, the friendships we make like this are what keeps the world of music turning.
Anything else you would like to share?
I just wanted to send a big huge thank you to the NewSong folks and an equally big congratulations to this year’s finalists! I’m so excited for this show and I’m honored to be a part of it once again!

Parker Ainsworth — the LA-based singer-songwriter who took the Grand Prize at NewSong’s 6th Annual LEAF Competition — will return to LEAF Saturday Oct. 19 for two intimate performances.
LEAF-goers can attend Ainsworth’s two sets on Saturday, Oct. 19 at The Barn at 3:15PM and the Jam Tavern at 8:45PM.
“Playing the Barn was such a magical experience,” says Ainsworth of the competition back in May 2019. “An open space full of music-loving folk, braving the elements to hear songs in their rawness. The event felt like it expanded me with the presence of genuine care … it pretty much blasted my heart wide open.”
He adds, “Talking with my fellow contestants reminded me that though this musical life can feel quite lonely at times, ultimately we’re never really alone. In fact, we’re unavoidably all in this together.”
Ainsworth was chosen from over 400 applicants to the LEAF competition and five other finalists. For the full LEAF schedule and lineup, click here. Those without LEAF tickets this year can catch Ainsworth at Isis Music Hall in West Asheville on Thursday Oct. 17. Tickets available here.
In addition to the paid, featured performances at LEAF, Ainsworth also advances as a finalist in the 18th annual, international NewSong Showcase and Competition, held November 23 at Isis Music Hall in Asheville. The grand-prize winner of that contest will be awarded the opportunity to make a six-song EP, recorded and mixed at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville and released on the NewSong Recordings label; and a performance showcase at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival’s coveted ASCAP Music Café.
There are so many talented artists who are part of the NewSong family — it can sometimes be difficult to keep up. That’s why each week, we compile a list of new releases, shows, and videos from past NewSong artists who we think deserve your attention.
And don’t forget! Your last chance to submit your original music to this year’s competition is Oct. 6. Get the full details on the event here. Submit your original music here.
Max Hatt / Edda Glass on tour this fall
Max Hatt / Edda Glass, NewSong Grand Prize Winners in 2014, are playing shows from coast to coast this year. Upcoming shows include venues in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Washington, Idaho, and California. “We’re playing at some super lovely theaters and performing arts centers, including The University of Vermont in Burlington, all the way west to Edmonds Center for the Arts in Washington state,” say the duo, whose jazz americana music has been described as “subtly poignant, elegantly funky, and haunting without trying to be” by Nels Cline of Wilco.
New album from Crys Matthews, These Old Hands, debuts October 11
2017 NewSong Grand Prize Winner Crys Matthews will release her newest album, These Old Hands, on October 11, National Coming Out Day. The grand prize album was recorded at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios with producer Gar Ragland. The result is what Matthews describes as a “breakup album,” featuring some of the most vulnerable tracks she’s ever written.
“’I know you’ll miss these hands and what these old hands can do’ is a lyric from the title track,” says Matthews. “I write songs with these hands, I make music with these hands, I build and break things with them, I comfort loved ones with them. My hands are very much a source of strength and power for me.”
Ben Lubeck, 2010 NewSong finalist and member of the band Farewell Milwaukee, released a solo album this week titled For You Again.
Via Lubeck: “For You Again explores the depth of family dynamics — a topic very near to my heart. For as long as I can remember my wife has always said that our relationship is the core of our family. That our love for our kids should be an extension of that relationship and if we don’t continue to cultivate our love for each other it can impact the way our girls grow up and how they view relationships as they get older. That sentiment is the backbone of this record and the songs weave in and out of that idea.”
Lubeck will perform an album release show at the Parkway Theatre in Minneapolis on Saturday, September 28th. To listen to and purchase For You Again, click here.
Maureen Andary records solo album, Big Girl Pants, with NewSong Recordings
Eleven years after her debut solo album, Washington, D.C.-based songwriter Maureen Andary returned to the studio to record “Big Girl Pants.” Andary is a multi-instrumentalist, blending her stellar vocal harmonies with guitar, ukulele and flute on the recordings. Her new songs range from lighthearted tunes about marriage to heavier subjects, like loss and grief.
“It’s called Big Girl Pants because I feel like that’s a kind of brusque euphemism for grow up,” says Andary. “Every day I have new challenges, and I have to pause and think: what is the adult way to deal with this, rather than just reacting. It’s really about pausing, being intentional, and grappling with challenges like mortality, parenting, marriage.” Read our full Q&A with Andary on the blog.
