This series of features highlights the 2015 NewSong Music finalists. Each artist is invited to Lincoln Center on January 7th for the opportunity to win the #NSM Grand Prize. We sat down with each finalist to learn more about their music and background. Hope you enjoy!

BIO
Steeped in Southern gospel music traditions from a very early age while surrounded by a soundscape of freeform radio, countrypolitan music and show tunes, Queen Esther grew up in the Deep South – Atlanta, GA and Charleston, SC respectively – as the middle child and the only daughter, with six brothers and a four-octave range. She began her gifted education in English and creative writing as a five-year-old.

Her work in New York City as a vocalist, lyricist, songwriter, actor/solo performer and playwright/librettist led to creative collaborations in neo-vaudeville, alt-theater, various alt-rock configurations, (neo) swing bands, trip hop DJs, spoken word performances, jazz combos, jam bands, various blues configurations, original Off Broadway plays and musicals, experimental music/art noise and performance art. Serious operatic training as a kid led to hard time in Austin, Texas — in theater as well as the live music scene — opening for artists as varied as Larry Carlton, The Neville Brothers, Crowded House and Chuck Berry.

A 2008 Grand Prize winner of the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition, Queen Esther has performed with guitar icon James “Blood” Ulmer internationally in various blues, rock and jazz configurations, including Blues Experience Raw, The Black Rock Experience and most recently with his seminal collective, Odyssey. She and her jazz quintet The Hot Five perform in New York City regularly, including New Year’s Eve Eve, The Jazz Age Lawn Party and the iconic Minton’s in Harlem. Accompanied by her Black Americana band The Blue Crowns, Queen Esther premiered her fall European tour at Porgy & Bess, Vienna’s esteemed concert hall. Her latest release, The Other Side — described as “the most exciting Afro-Americana release of the year” by Paste magazine — is garnering airplay and stellar reviews worldwide.

Q: What is your songwriting process?
A: As a multidisciplinary artist, I am a conduit. When inspiration comes in the form of music, I find myself listening to songs on a radio somewhere in the recesses of my imagination that only I can hear. My hardest job is getting those songs out of my head and into the world, sounding as fresh and immediate and pristine as they do when only I can hear them — by any means necessary.

Influences? I admire Dolly Parton a great deal. She’s a muscian, she is a consummate performer, and she’s always owned her songs. I love Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Memphis Minnie for the same reasons — all of them, bandleaders, songwriters, musicians and powerful trailblazers.

Q:What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
A: I actually got a little choked up. I called my husband. I sent a tweet about it. And then I stepped out into the hallway of my building and did a cartwheel. The wonderfully miraculous golden goodness of being a finalist in a competition of this stature — one that embraces original songs from performing songwriters — can hardly be overstated, especially when you’ve been going at it alone, as I have, and in a place as harrowing and unforgiving as New York City. To put it in another way — it means everything. It means validation. It means exposure. It means the world.

Q: How did you hear about New Song Music?
A: I was sifting through the Internet for songwriting opportunities. When I found the NewSong Contest, it sounded too good to be true. (Frankly, it still does.)

Q: What is currently happening with your music?
A: My 2015 Black Americana self release — “The Other Side” — is still garnering reviews and airplay internationally. Learn More!

2015 NewSong Music Finalist: The Shades

Thursday, December 17th, 2015

THE SHADES (CHICAGO, IL)

This series of features highlights the 2015 NewSong Music finalists. Each artist is invited to Lincoln Center on January 7th for the opportunity to win the #NSM Grand Prize. We sat down with each finalist to learn more about their music and background. Hope you enjoy!

BIO
The Shades consist of Andrew DeMuro, and brothers Phil & Mark Jacobson. Although still relatively new to the Chicago music scene, the group’s roots extend back to 2008 when all three members first connected at the University of Miami in Florida. Fans credit close, three-part harmonies as the element that makes The Shades’ music stand out. Their smooth vocals, refreshing arrangements and creative mashups have peaked the interest of fans of Crosby, Stills, & Nash, James Taylor, John Mayer & Ed Sheeran alike.

Having spent the past year gracing the likes of the House of Blues, Evanston SPACE, Mayne Stage and Schubas Tavern in Chicago, The Shades are currently writing and recording new music to share with fans across the Midwest and the Northeast. Having made their New York City debut at Rockwood Music Hall in August, the guys plan to return to the east coast for a tour of colleges & universities in early 2016. ‘Take You Home,’ the group’s first single release, premiered as American Songwriter Magazine’s Daily Discovery in November 2015, and can be streamed free on www.soundcloud.com/wetheshades.

Q: What is your songwriting process?
A: If the Beatles had been plumbers rather than songwriters, chances are we’d be working on toilets at the moment. They are THAT integral to who we are as artists. As far as our process, we like to write songs on Monday mornings, after a complete breakfast and a few cups of coffee. It usually starts with a simple chord progression, and ends with three or four complete lyric-overhauls. Most of the time in between is spent arranging vocal harmonies, which is definitely our favorite element of songwriting.

Q:What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
A: For us, this is validation that we’re on to something, and motivation to continue working incredibly hard at our craft. Our goal will always be to play music for people until there is not an ear left who wants to hear it. Being selected as a finalist is an excuse for us to keep moving toward our goal, and to do it surrounded by really gifted songwriters. Also, we practiced the 3 H’s: Handshakes, High Fives, & Hugs.

Q: How did you hear about New Song Music?
A: We’ve been following NewSong online for some time now. We made it a point to enter several songwriting contests in 2015, and due to the unique prize package and excellent opportunity for exposure, NewSong was at the top of our list.

Q: What is currently happening with your music?
A: We are in the process of recording our first EP, which we hope to release at right about the time the weather starts to get warm here in Chicago. Before that, we’ll be taking a tour of the Northeast and New England in early April to make new fans and do some serious promoting of our original tunes!

2015 NewSong Music Finalist: Sarah Morris

Thursday, December 17th, 2015

SARAH MORRIS (SHOREVIEW, MN)

This series of features highlights the 2015 NewSong Music finalists. Each artist is invited to Lincoln Center on January 7th for the opportunity to win the #NSM Grand Prize. We sat down with each finalist to learn more about their music and background. Hope you enjoy!

BIO
Singer-songwriter Sarah Morris has a way of captivating her audiences with songs about the highs and lows of love. With a voice both cozy and commanding, Sarah allows us to feel every note. Her lyrics resonate with a combination of unflinching honesty and tenderness: portraits of love, loss, gratitude and regret.

Morris’ love for music grew from her parents record collection, with David Bowie, The Beatles, and Frank Sinatra songs helping to shape her musical DNA. She laid the groundwork for her career at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, followed by a post-graduation move to Nashville, TN. Now firmly planted in the Twin Cities music scene, Morris has been building a solid reputation with authentic songwriting and powerful performances. In recent years, Morris has settled into life as a wife and mother, both of which give a unique voice to her craft.

In September of 2015, Sarah released her 3rd album, “Ordinary Things” – a collection of songs that looks at little things that surround all of us; the daily ups and downs, love and loss, joy and anger, the desire for more, and the beauty that can be found in the smallest moments. Recorded at RiverRock Studios in Minneapolis with her band, “Ordinary Things” has received critical acclaim, with Chris Riemenschneider of the Star Tribune saying, ““Rootsy singer Sarah Morris offers a Norah Jones-like approach to Americana/alt-country, smoothing over its rough edges with a butter-velvety voice and an intimate songwriting style.”.

Q:What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
A: I was thrilled – I AM thrilled! I love that NewSong aims to create a community of performing songwriters. It is such an honor to be included among such talented artists!

Well, one of my primary goals for 2016 is to get my music ‘out there’ more – as in, physically get myself out of my home state and play for new people, and meet new artists to collaborate with. So being selected as a NewSong finalist allows me to start my new year off in the best way – by keeping my promise to myself! Also, it means so much to me to know that someone listened to my songs and was moved by them in some way. I can’t wait to meet the other finalists, and see their performances. I am ready to be inspired!

Q: How did you hear about New Song Music?
A: I’ve been lucky enough to share two shows with Rachael Kilgour in the last year – in following her social media I saw her mentions of the LEAF Festival, and it brought me to the NewSong Music website.

Q: What is currently happening with your music?
A: I released my new album, “Ordinary Things”, in September 2015. I am sending it out to the Americana Music Association reporting stations in late January, and will be releasing a music video for my song, “Sway Me”. Goals for 2016 include two small tours, participating in 2 online weekly songwriting challenges, continuing my local performances, and working towards my next album (always!).

Q: What is your songwriting process?
A: I am a stay at home mother of two little ones. It’s taken me a while to figure out how to get the writing done while all-day parenting…because my kids are absolutely NOT interested in playing by themselves while I sit down with my guitar and a blank notebook 😉 I do most of my writing while on walks with the kids and my dog – I’ll get an idea, usually lyrics and melody together, and I just work through it on the walk. As soon as I get home I record anything I like on my phone. I begin every day by writing ‘morning pages’ (3 pages of free-form journaling before anyone else is up and sharing their thoughts with me!), and I process through my song ideas there. I usually don’t sit down with my guitar until the song is just about completed. Then, as soon as I have a completed song, I record a video of me performing the song in it’s super-raw state and I share it on facebook. I started this routine as part of an online weekly songwriting challenge, where we receive a writing prompt and have a week to compose a song around that prompt, and I’ve kept it up on my own – after I’ve lived with a song for a while it’s always fun to go back and see how it started out.

2015 NewSong Music Finalist: Ken Yates

Thursday, December 17th, 2015

KEN YATES (TORONTO, ONT)

KenYatesHeadShot

This series of features highlights the 2015 NewSong Music finalists. Each artist is invited to Lincoln Center on January 7th for the opportunity to win the #NSM Grand Prize. We sat down with each finalist to learn more about their music and background. Hope you enjoy!

BIO
Born and Raised in London, Ontario, Ken Yates moved to Boston to study songwriting at Berklee College of Music. It was there that he developed his skills as a songwriter, releasing his first album, “The Backseat EP”. Yates’ songwriting ability started getting notice right away, including attention from John Mayer, who posted a full page blog about Yates’ ability as a writer stating, “Ken Yates wrote a song called ‘I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love’… this song moved me when I first heard it and still does today”.

https://soundcloud.com/ken-yates/i-dont-wanna-fall-in-love

In 2013, he released his first full length album “twenty-three” with US record label Mishara Music. He has toured with many notable names including veteran singer/songwriter and mentor, Livingston Taylor, Sister Hazel, Peter Katz, and Liz Longley and has songs in heavy rotation on Sirius XM’s The Coffee House where he was nominated for The Coffee House Songwriter Discovery of the Year. He was recently chosen as The 2014 Colleen Peterson Award winner by the Ontario Arts Council for his song “The One That Got Away”.

Yates is currently working on his new album “Huntsville”, produced by Jim Bryson and set for release in 2016.

Q:What does it mean to you to be selected as a NewSong finalist, and what do you hope to get out of the experience?
A: Thrilled! It really means a lot to be selected knowing there were so many entries and a ton of great songs out there. I’m looking forward to getting to know the other 9 finalists and sharing the experience with them. Being a songwriter can be a lonely road sometimes, and I love that the NewSong contest creates an environment that allows artist to connect with each other and hopefully create lasting relationships.

Q: How did you hear about New Song Music?
A: I heard about it from a few past finalists who speak very highly of the NewSong Contest being a great community for artists.

Q: What is currently happening with your music?
A: I have a new album called “Huntsville” coming out in 2016. I don’t have a release date yet, but the song I submitted for the NewSong Contest will be the title track.

Q: What is your songwriting process?
A: Songs come to life in different ways, but I typically start with a guitar part that outlines a melody. Sometimes I’ll go for weeks singing that melody over and over until I have lyrical idea. Some lyrics come quicker than others, but I won’t start writing words until I think I have a good lyrical idea. When I first started writing, I mostly made up stories, but a lot of my newer songs either stem from my own experiences, or they come from real life stories I’ve heard about. Most importantly, I try to write every day. That kind of repetition is essential to coming up with good ideas.

Science Partner is a six-piece rock band that showcases lush, three-part harmonies, walls of guitars, a tight rhythm section and unabashedly catchy pop arrangements. Made up of members of some of Denver’s finest and busiest bands, their performances are somewhat rare but highly polished. Science Partner’s lyrical content ranges from the exiguity of humanity to the fleeting fame of a child.

covenhoven-fb_200w

Covenhoven

Colorado musician Joel Van Horne releases music under the moniker Covenhoven, also the name given to the cabin his grandfather built deep in the woods of southern Wyoming between 1955 and 1965. His music has been referred to as “symphonic folk” and “mountain music.”

Wednesday, July 22 – Max Hatt / Edda Glass

Max Hatt / Edda Glass

2014 NewSong Contest grand prize winners Matt Hatt / Edda Glass describe their collaboration as an experiment to determine if complex, sophisticated music is still culturally relevant, with the ability to narrate human situations and resonate without translation and abstraction. The duo identifies their music as Bossa Nova, Brazilian jazz, jazz Americana and vocal jazz.

Whiskey Folk

Whiskey Folk’s “folk noir” blends ominous, reverb-dripping guitars with boot-stomping train beats and funereal horns to create sonic backdrops for down-on-your-luck ballads and beer-soaked anthems.

Troubadour & Musical Patriarch Jim Avett to perform in Asheville on Saturday, June 6.

Monday, May 18th, 2015

Tuesday, May 19. Asheville, NC. NewSong is excited to announce the upcoming concert, ‘An Evening of Story & Song with Jim Avett.’ The show will begin at 7 PM on Saturday, June 6 in the beautiful and acoustically rich Sanctuary of downtown Asheville’s Central United Methodist Church (27 Church Street).

The concert is presented by Central United Methodist Church, in association with the Orange Peel, WNCW, NewSong Music and the Asheville Area Arts Council. Tickets are $17.00 in advance and $20.00 on the day of show, and are available for purchase online at theorangepeel.net. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity.

The son of a Methodist minister and a classical pianist, Jim Avett grew up in a home full of love and music, learning the importance of hard work and honest living. He and his wife instilled these same values in their children – including sons and musicians Seth and Scott of the Avett Brothers – and tempered them with a lot of fun and music. His guitar was an ever present instrument, and there was always singing.

As much as he enjoyed writing and performing his music, Avett put his family first and spent 35 years running his welding company, building bridges along much of the east coast in order to provide for them. After retiring from welding, he returned to music and recorded Jim Avett and Family in 2008, a collection of gospel music, with his children, Bonnie, Scott and Seth.

In 2010 he released Tribes, a collection of original tunes, followed by 2012’s Second Chance, which draws heavily on classic country and early rock and roll influences.

Avett now tours across the country, performing in listening rooms and festivals from the Southeast to Pacific Northwest to New England. His shows are a combination of beloved country tunes, gospel, original ballads and the stories he tells to introduce them.

Rachael Kilgour Wins the Second Annual LEAF Festival Singer-Songwriter Competition

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Tuesday, May 12. Asheville, NC. Eight singer-songwriters from across the country convened in the beautiful mountains of Western NC this past Saturday night (May 9) at the 40th LEAF Festival, to perform and compete in the second annual NewSong Presents: LEAF Singer-Songwriter Showcase & Competition. It was standing room only in the festival’s Barn venue, a historic wooden structure blessed with outstanding acoustics, history and vibe, having been constructed in the early 20th Century by the illustrious students of the now defunct Black Mountain College (whose alums include John Cage, Buckminster Fuller and Robert Rauschenberg).

rachael-kilgour-leaf-congrats-v2

The order in which these talented singer-songwriters presented their original songs was happenstance; despite having names drawn from a hat to determine the order just minutes before the program began, the energy and flow of the music from one performer to the next was remarkably cohesive and arcing, much like that of a favorite and well-worn album.

And while all the finalists played an integral role in the evening’s showcase, it was Duluth, Minnesota’s Rachael Kilgour who impressed both the judges and the audience the most; a packed house even awarded Kilgour the only standing ovation of the show after she completed her set in the contest’s second round.

“It was an impressive group of talented singer-songwriters,” stated Grammy-winning producer Steven Heller, one of the contest’s four judges. “The eight finalists are all winners. The grand star Rachel Kilgour, I hope, will become a household name, moving us with her insightful, emotive words and song.”

After the first round, Kilgour was selected along with Chad Elliott (Coon Rapids, IA) and Asheville’s own Brittany Ann to advance to the final and second round. According to judge Josh Blake, an Asheville-based producer, musician and president of iamavl.com, it was “the authenticity of Rachel’s performance, combined with her ability to describe her life’s experiences through her music, that allowed her to rise to the top of an extremely talented pool.”

“This year’s LEAF Contest received really strong entries coming from across the country and beyond,” stated judge Gar Ragland, the president and co-founder of NewSong Music, which produced the event. “The caliber of songwriting showcased at the LEAF Contest finals was very impressive, yet Rachael’s expressive and dynamic performance style – coupled with really well crafted lyrics and engaging melodies – set her apart from the other talent.”

“We’re also very excited to once again be able to support the wonderful LEAF Schools & Streets programs from proceeds from contest entry fees,” continued Ragland. “The LEAF Schools & Streets programs do amazing work across our communities in western NC and beyond, and we’re proud to support the program in this way.”

Rachel Kilgour - In America

As the winner, Kilgour will return to the LEAF Festival this Fall for a mainstage performance of her own, and she’ll also advance as a regional finalist in the next international NewSong Contest.

“I loved my time in North Carolina and at LEAF, thank you for the incredible opportunity! The tour of Echo Mountain Studio on Saturday blew my mind, and left me dreaming bigger recording dreams than ever before. I am inspired. I so enjoyed connecting with the other finalists and hearing their work. I think we all felt grateful to perform in such a sweet space to such an attentive and encouraging audience – a songwriter can’t ask for much more than that. I am happy that my work was received so well by the judges and by the audience, it is quite an honor to have been selected as the winner of the competition. Thank you for the recognition and for all of the work you do for folks like me. I can’t wait to return in the fall!” – Rachael Kilgour
