NewSong Music Presents: Amy Speace and special guest Jeffrey Dean Foster

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

NewSong Music and the Hanesbrand Theatre were happy to present Amy Speace with Jeffrey Dean Foster on Saturday, January 19, 2013 as an ongoing part of the NewSong Emerging Artists Series.

After releasing her first set of songs independently (Fable, 2002), Speace’s luck changed when a chance encounter with Judy Collins’s manager changed her life. Judy Collins signed Amy to her own Wildflower Records label in 2006, releasing ‘Songs for Bright Street’ to critical acclaim. That record included a duet with The Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and spent months at the top of the Folk and Americana Roots charts. ‘The Killer In Me’ followed in 2009, with a rare duo appearance by Ian “Mott the Hoople” Hunter, who brought Amy to the UK for his 2009 Acoustic Tour. USA Today called Amy “a rising star”, NPR named the title track from Killer “Song of the Day,” writing: “her velvety, achy voice recalls an early Lucinda Williams.” In 2010, John Platt of NYC’s premiere AAA radio station WFUV named Amy’s song “The Weight of the World” #4 in his list of the “Best Folk Songs of the Decade,” a song that Judy Collins herself would record and call “one of the best political folk songs I’ve ever heard”. Appearances at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, the Philadelphia Folks Festival and Mountain Stage and shows supporting Nanci Griffith and Guy Clark followed.

In 2009, Amy shifted landscapes, moved south to Nashville, beginning the writing of her latest album ‘Land Like A Bird’ (Thirty Tigers, 2011). Produced by Neilson Hubbard, the record features guest vocals by Kim Richey and is already receiving the best reviews of Amy’s career. Bird had its UK release in July 2012, when Amy started touring with Alejandro Escovedo.

Lora-Faye and Chris Velan record projects at Echo Mountain Recording Studio

Saturday, January 19th, 2013

The past two weeks have been fun, exciting, and bursting with musical creativity and teamwork.  At our new location at Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, NC we were proud to collaborate with two outstanding artists as they recorded separate projects.  Chris Velan and Lora-Faye each spent a week at Echo Mountain recording exciting new material.

Lora-Faye was welcomed to Echo Mountain as the grand prize winner of the 2012 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest.  She was selected from more than 2,000 entries from last year’s contest, and as a part of her prize she recorded a fully-funded album at Echo Mountain Recording Studios with hit producer, Iestyn Polson, who has worked with the likes of David Grey, Patti Smith, and David Bowie.  The album will be released on the NewSong Recordings label in 2013.

Chris Velan also worked with producer Iestyn Polson during his time at Echo Mountain.  As a part of a New Year’s resolution to put our more recorded material in 2013, Chris and Iestyn spent a few days in the studio recording Chris’ new album (“The Long Goodbye”) with the hopes of capturing lightning in a bottle.  Tracking and mixing feverishly, friends and fellow musicians worked hard to bring out and record their best in the rising musical mecca of Asheville, NC.  We look forward to bringing this new release to you soon.

NewSong Music Presents: David Berkeley at the Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

photo by © 2012 Darial Sneed

It was a pleasure to work with our friends at the Lincoln Center to produce a captivating performance by David Berkeley, who was a  2010 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest Award Round finalist.

“[Berkeley] sings in a lustrous, melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake. As his melodies ascend to become benedictions and consolations, the music shimmers and peals.” Jon Pareles, The New York Times

David Berkeley is a romantic realist, known for his ability to look at the human condition in all its complexity and give us luminous songs full of sunshine and anguish, melancholy and delight. He brings the people and situations he sings about to vibrant life with a warm, rich tenor that often slips into an aching falsetto to underline the overwhelming emotions that can move us to tears or laughter.

2012 GRAND PRIZE WINNER LORA FAYE

Brooklyn’s Lora-Faye Wins the 2012 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest at Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium.

New York, NY. Brooklyn’s twenty-three year old Lora-Faye was chosen last Saturday as this year’s grand prize winner of the eleventh annual Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. Along with the other finalists – who came from as far as Anchorage, Alaska to compete – Lora-Faye performed her original songs to a packed house at the Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium. And after a series of two rounds – the matinee semi-finals and the evening’s award round – it was Lora-Faye whom the panel of judges ultimately crowned as this year’s overall winner.

“As in years past, narrowing the field of finalists was a very difficult endeavor for the judges,” said NewSong Music Group director and founder Gar Ragland, who produces the event and serves as one of the judges. “The finalists are all quite talented as both songwriters and performers, and their styles vary to the point that it’s quite difficult to compare them to one another. All things being equal, it really comes down to which artist moves you the most. The combination of Lora-Faye’s dynamic, expressive vocals, eclectic instrumentation and engaging, somewhat offbeat approach to songwriting placed her songs and performance above the rest.”

“It’s a rare honor in life to have so many talented people in one place both supporting and nurturing each others musical journey and growth,” said PledgeMusic CEO Benji Rogers, who also served as a judge. “One of the hardest moments I have faced in a long time was having to choose just one out of the finalists. They were all that good.”

Selected from the nearly 2,000 entries received in this year’s contest, Lora-Faye will record a fully-funded album at the beautiful Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, North Carolina with hit producer Iestyn Polson, who has worked with the likes of David Gray, Patti Smith, and David Bowie.

The album will be released on the Brooklyn-based NewSong Recordings label in 2013. In addition, Lora-Faye will perform on NPR’s internationally broadcast Mountain Stage show, perform at Lincoln Center, appear at the 2013 Sundance/ASCAP Music Café, and receive a fully-funded album release pr/publicity campaign from the Press House, sponsored by PledgeMusic.

“The Mountain Stage NewSong Contest continues to identify stronger and stronger talent,” said Mountain Stage founder and host Larry Groce, who also served as one of the judges. “Several of this year’s finalists are possible Mountain Stage guests and I’m looking forward to what Iestyn Polson and Lora-Faye create in the studio. To get ten days in a studio with a producer like Iestyn is a tremendous opportunity for an emerging artist, and we’re excited to feature Lora-Faye on Mountain Stage when the album is finished.”

“I’m so thrilled to be working with Iestyn Polson on this record, and to make this album with him at Echo Mountain Recording Studios down in Asheville.” said Lora-Faye. “It’s an enormous honor to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing producer – and an even bigger honor to be picked to do so from such a talented group of musicians!”

Lora-Faye Live at Lincoln Center EP

“The whole [contest] experience was a great reminder of how hugely important community is for anyone trying to make meaningful music – everybody I met through the contest was so genuinely interested in helping each other to make authentic, dynamic work,” Lora-Faye continued. “Honestly, it seems to me that the NewSong Contest is just as much about making community as it is about declaring a winner – a rare trait in this cutthroat industry. I can’t wait to run into Carolina Story in Nashville, Tom Meny in Austin, Jeffrey Martin out in Portland, and all the other fantastic folks I had the honor of sharing the stage with. Playing at Lincoln Center was a dream come true, and so is singing on Mountain Stage. And I can’t wait to see what kind of record Iestyn and I come up with. I think it’s gonna be nice and weird – just the way I like things.”

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Lora-Faye spent time in both Massachusetts and Vermont before recently returning home to whole-heartedly pursue a career in music. She has released one EP, ‘Social Magic,’ which she says is greatly inspired by The Anthology of American Folk Music. A self-taught singer, guitarist, banjoist and occasional rock drummer, she sees her lack of formal music training as an asset. “I think it’s a blessing to not know theory, because it frees me from the rules which I think if I were aware of might stifle me, creatively. It’s been really interesting playing with highly-trained Berklee kids in my band — it kind of feels like using a calculator for the first time. I’ll say – ‘hey I think the bridge needs to sound a little more whiskey-soaked and a little less prairie home companion’ and they’ll be like ‘oh yeah just play the A flat diminished 7 with an E in the bass thingy.’ They know the rules and also know how to break them. It’s incredibly inspiring.”

In addition to performances by this year’s finalists at the live competition, both the semi-final and award rounds featured encore performances by 2009 NewSong Contest winner Reed Waddle and Firehorse’s frontwoman Leah Siegel, respectively. The rounds were hosted by WFUV radio personalities Eric Holland (semi-final round) and John Platt (award round).

NewSong Music Group opens office in Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording Studios.

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

For Immediate Release.

September 18, 2012. Asheville, NC. Brooklyn based NewSong Music Group and Asheville’s Echo Mountain Recording  announce that NewSong has opened an office in Echo Mountain’s internationally recognized and prize winning recording facility. Located in the beautiful and music-rich haven in the mountains of western North Carolina, this will serve as NewSong’s southern outpost.

The Asheville office is being headed by producer and NewSong director and co-founder Gar Ragland, a native North Carolinian. “I’m very excited with this development,” says Ragland. “It’s great to be here in Asheville and back in North Carolina after so many years. Asheville is such a creative and vibrant community, and we’re looking forward to contributing to its cultural and entrepreneurial fabric in many different ways.”

NewSong Music is an independent music company founded in 2001. Its mission is to build and service a supportive community of performers and songwriters across all genres of music and levels of skill, and to identify the truly exceptional artists within this community. It then works closely with these talented artists to develop their careers and introduce their music to a broader, international audience. The Asheville office will complement NewSong’s office and studio facility in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood.

NewSong’s programs include the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest, its annual performance and songwriting competition produced in collaboration with National Public Radio’s Mountain Stage show, a record label (NewSong Recordings), and an artist management division. It also produces and  curates concerts with partners that include Arts Brookfield and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York and the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC.

NewSong and Echo Mountain’s partnership first originated in the spring of 2012 with Echo Mountain’s sponsorship of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. As sponsors, Echo Mountain will host the recording of the fully-funded grand prize album awarded to this year’s overall winner of the contest. The winner will be determined at the live performance contest finals held on October 20, 2012 at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

The winning album will be produced by Iestyn Polson, whose credits include David Gray, Patti Smith and David Bowie. And it will be released on NewSong Recordings.

“We’re really excited to have NewSong join the Echo Mountain family,” says Jessica Tomasin, the studio’s manager. “We have a great group of creative businesses that occupy the top floor of our API studio.  We help each other out, bounce ideas off of each other, and are always looking for ways to collaborate. The partnership with the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is just one of many projects that I’m sure we will work on together.”

“One goal in working closely with Echo Mountain is to facilitate access to this premier recording studio to   emerging artists in the NewSong community,” says Ragland. “In addition to bringing this year’s grand prize winner of the NewSong Contest to Echo Mountain, we aim to bring other talented artists here as well, and collaborate on new initiatives to promote and celebrate great artists and music.”
